Few can deny that one of the work of the church is benevolence work. Paul wrote in Gal 6:10, "Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith." We also read of the benevolent work of the church in the first century (Acts 4,5,6 among other examples).
Today, we have many institutions which are also carrying out benevolent works. A preacher taught that these things are wrong. It is wrong because these works are to be done by men, for men's glory and not for God's glory. He further adds that it is God's wisdom to set up the church to do this work, and if anyone does it outside of the church, he does it in a different way. When he does so, then he is doing it on his own wisdom, and this implies he is putting his wisdom above God's wisdom. He finally concludes by saying that robbing the church of its work is robbing God of His glory.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you agree or disagree? Does the Bible agree with these things?
