Friday marked the 15th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's passing on. He died from a crash during the 1994 Imola F1 GP. Here is the video of this crash.
Looking at the footage itself, it's hard to believe such a crash was massive enough to cause a fatal injury. But it did, and he lost his life at the age of 34. How sad to die on Malaysia/Singapore's Labour Day.
Compare that to this.
Now if you were to watch that footage, which was Robert Kubica's crash 2 years ago in Canada, you would have guessed that the guy is probably six feet under by now. The real outcome? He sustained a sprained ankle, and that's it. +.+
It's amazing how the advancement in technology has been put to such good use that a guy can even be conscious even after such a crash... As one of the comments in one of the crash videos on youtube put,
"HANS could protect his neck from breaking, but he would have died from inner bleedings and organ ruptures. He slowed down from 250 kph to near 0 in a few centimetres, which means a deceleration of far over 200 g. U cant survive this."
HANS here refers to the Head and Neck Support System, the thing that drivers have on their necks as a brace for crashes like that. But seriously, no one survives 200G. That's outrageous!!!
I doubt the crash was over 200G in terms of impact, but you can only see how dangerous it was.
Again, you really gotta give props to Dr. Robert Hubbard for inventing this system. It was helped to keep F1 safer so that the fans and drivers can focus on the driving and not worry so much about their safety.
